Professor Curfs is Professor of Learning Disabilities at Maastricht University Medical Centre, Department of Clinical Genetics, and director of the Governor Kremers Centre at the Academic Hospital Maastricht and Maastricht University.

He was rewarded with the Governor Kremers professorship at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University, a research chair in intellectual disability at the Maastricht University Medical Centre. He heads the program 'Intellectual Disabilities: a life cycle approach to valuing people' within the School for Public Health and Primary Care and the program 'Specific syndromes and mental retardation' within the research institute Growth & Development.

He has published and presented extensively on medical, behavioural and psychiatric aspects of genetically determined neurodevelopmental disorders e.g. PWS and Rett syndrome. He is one of the cofounders of the ESSRA group (European Scientific Rett Research Association) and a member of the ESSRA board. He is one of the participants and co-founders of the European PWS research consortium, an EU approved and funded PWS research consortium.

For the IPWSO (International Prader-Willi Syndrome Organisation) he has the chair of the Scientific Advisory Board.
